kornu [High Tides Phenomenon and the Resilience of the island’s communities of Ada]

Kewunor, Alorkpem, Azizakpe and Azizanya are island communities along Ghana’s Volta Delta in Ada, experiencing annual high tides. This project explores their resilience as they navigate the challenges posed by the phenomenon.

These islands are situated near the Estuary, where the volta river and the Atlantic Ocean converge are home to mangroves and aquatic life. Here communities whose way of life is increasingly threatened by climate change have developed adaptive strategies, reinforcing the edges of their homes with broken cement blocks and sand in an effort to hold back the encroaching waters.

The project highlights the impacts of environmental shifts, including the loss of properties, destruction of homes and the disappearance of communities. It examines the relationship between people, land, and water along Ghana’s eastern coastal delta region who have been heavily impacted by the tidal waves.

Kornu is a local Dangme word meaning “HIGH TIDES”
