Gen Z Against Galamsey [illegal mining]
On the 5th October, 2024, Ghanaians take to the streets in mass protest against illegal gold mining, known locally as Galamsey, and demand the release of 54 activists who were arrested earlier in September during a demonstration against illegal mining in Accra.
The demonstrators not only raised their voices against environmental destruction but also demanded the release of 53 protesters arrested two weeks prior.
The march kicked off from Okponglo in Legon and moved through the major streets of Accra. Led by the police, the passionate crowd—mostly youth clad in red and black—chanted patriotic songs that echoed their unwavering resolve. After enduring a 12-kilometer walk, the protest concluded near the Accra Sports Stadium, where it transitioned into a solemn vigil in honor of the detained protesters.
